Ring Mountain kitchen rock

Ring Mountain kitchen rock
One bedrock mortar, one anvil, and midden
Elevation 23 ft.

This is another one of Joel’s discoveries. It’s a beautiful streamside site not far from the bay. The mortar is on mica schist. Look for small garnets and larger amphibolite crystals embedded in the rock. These are unusual high pressure, low temperature minerals.

The kitchen rock early on an overcast morning. Note flecks of shell in the midden surrounding the rock.

A beautifully formed bowl-shaped mortar. The anvil is the shallow depression closer to the camera than the mortar.
