Miwok Meadows #2
Shellmound midden at the head of Miwok Meadows in China Camp State Park
Elevation 43 ft.
Looking over the mound with San Pablo Bay and the Napa Hills in the background. There was a Miwok village at this site. The map accompanying N. C. Nelson’s Shellmounds of the San Francisco Bay Region showed eleven shellmounds strung out along the shoreline here. This was probably one of them.
This mound might best be described as midden with shell. We did not see any whole shell–just small fragments sparsely distributed in the soil, which appears to be mainly dirt. The soil here is not particularly dark, and it lacks the springy texture one feels on the Siplichiquin shellmound in Shellmound Valley. These shell fragments were returned to the mound after being photographed.
