What was this huge mortar with the recessed rim used for? Was its position on the edge of this rock significant? Eliminate the scrub oak growing up from the rocks below, and you have a dead on view of Mt. Diablo.
The missing part of this rock rests broken-side down about 15 feet away. The rest of the mortar is there all right. Check it out. Note how cleanly the rock broke. What could have caused it?
