Los Meganos State Historic Park
2 bedrock mortars and two anvils
Elevation 230 ft.
These mortars sit near Briones Creek in the hills behind John Marsh’s house. We wouldn’t have looked for mortars or even hiked here if Joel had not made an initial reconnaissance of this area.
Bob looks toward the mountain and its subsidiary peaks. The Briones Creek channel lies in the gray track. Prior to the introduction of European cultivars, this area was a native grassland.
A closer view of the mortars. The inside surface of the cone-shaped mortar is so smooth some commentators would refer to it as “polished.” We prefer “machined.”
