Joel’s Fat Lip Mortars
Three bedrock mortars in a beautiful picnic site
Elevation 776 ft.
Thanks to Joel for discovering this special site.
We’ve found plenty of mortars with rounded rims in the Bay Area but few whose rims rise above the surface of the surrounding rock and none that rise so dramatically.
This rim forms a nearly perfect ring. It may have been pecked out from the surrounding surface. Did these “fat lip” mortars have some special function? Note that the rock is poorly cemented sandstone and is full of small pebbles.
This site sits on a little bluff with a charming bay view.
