Horse Heaven Trail
3 bedrock mortars and 1 cupule/anvil on Horse Heaven Trail below Mt. Allison.
We were turned on to this site by Tom Mangan’s blog. Thanks Tom!
Horse Heaven Trail is the “road less traveled” to the top of Mission Peak. As we were writing up this site a hiker passed by and asked what we were doing. When we told him he exclaimed, “I’ve been hiking up here for years and never noticed.” That’s why we’re doing this.
The grinding rock on Horse Heaven Trail sits on the side of a hill quite a distance from the nearest water source, which illustrates once again that Indians were everywhere.
Be sure to push on to Mission Peak. On the way, visit McClure Spring. There are supposed to be more bedrock mortars below McClure Spring along Agua Caliente Creek near the park residence. We haven’t found them yet.
These are beautiful examples of cone-shaped mortars.
