Buckeye Canyon Mound
Shellmound in a beautiful canyon setting
Elevation 242 ft.
Thanks to midden man for directing us here.
The map accompanying N. C. Nelson’s Shellmounds of the San Francisco Bay Region showed six shellmounds clustered along the south shore of the now-filled Brisbane lagoon. Undoubtedly this was one of them.
Looking out over the mound. We estimate its size as 25 yards square. Today warehouses occupy the former site of Brisbane Lagoon.
Most of the shell has on the surface of this mound has been pretty well pulverized. This is a well-known and popular site. Many feet have trod this ground.
Bob returns to the mound some of the larger shell fragments he found during his reconnaissance.
We were not responsible for this small excavation on the mound. Please respect the history here. Do not dig or remove artifacts.
